Marine propulsion solutions

Marine propulsion solutions

Navigating the complexities of modern naval architecture requires more than just raw power; it demands integrated marine powertrain solutions capable of balancing high torque density with stringent emission compliance requiring aftertreatment systems (DPF and SCR). At Dumarey, we bridge the gap between advanced automotive-derived engineering and the harsh requirements of the maritime environment. Our expertise focuses on optimizing propulsion efficiency for a wide range of vessels, from high-speed interceptors and luxury motor yachts to heavy-duty commercial fishing vessels, ensuring a seamless synergy between the prime mover and the entire driveline.

Energineering your future

Advanced Marine Engineering Innovations

The efficiency of modern vessels is increasingly dictated by the sophistication of marine engine control systems. Unlike standard industrial applications, nautical engineering must account for variable load profiles, corrosive environments, and the need for rapid transient response during docking or emergency maneuvers.

We specialize in developing control architectures that allow for precise calibration of fuel injection and air management, ensuring that every kilowatt produced is optimized for the specific hydrodynamic profile of the hull. As established control units suppliers, we develop the digital brain necessary to manage complex propulsion layouts in both recreational and commercial sectors.

  • The Seatek 10.3 L engine, developed in close technical partnership with SEATEK, employs Dumarey’s Electronic Platform as its core engine control unit (ECU), applying advanced calibration strategies to manage high‑pressure fuel injection, air‑path control, and transient torque delivery required by offshore racing and fast‑patrol vessel operations.
Building on this demanding application, the Electronic Platform showcases its broader versatility as a scalable, field‑agnostic control solution, supported by a fully customizable software architecture capable of adapting to propulsion and industrial systems well beyond the marine sector.
Through this integration, Dumarey strengthens its role as a supplier delivering bespoke power outputs, advanced diagnostics, and maximum reliability for OEM engine programs across multiple industries.

Sustainable Marine Propulsion Systems

The maritime industry is undergoing a paradigm shift toward decarbonization, driven by both regulatory pressures (IMO Tier III) and environmental responsibility.

Transitioning from traditional diesel layouts to hybrid and zero-emission configurations requires a deep understanding of energy density and system recovery. This holistic approach ensures that marine propulsion solutions remain sustainable without compromising vessel autonomy.

  • Fuel Cell Integration: as showcased at the 2023 Damen Festival in collaboration with General Motors, our flywheel energy storage systems play a key role in hydrogen-powered vessels by acting as a dynamic buffer between fuel cells and propulsion loads.
By absorbing transient power peaks and recovering kinetic energy during load variations, the flywheel reduces fuel cell oversizing, stabilizes the balance-of-plant (BoP), and improves overall system efficiency. This architecture is particularly relevant for port authority vessels and short-sea shipping applications targeting true zero-emission operation with optimized energy management.
  • HVO Biofuel Adoption: in partnership with Enilive, we validated HVOlution, a second-generation paraffinic biofuel for marine applications within hybrid powertrains incorporating flywheel energy storage.
In this configuration, the flywheel mitigates load fluctuations and peak demand on conventional engines running on HVO, enabling smoother operation, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced COâ‚‚-equivalent emissions. This solution allows existing vessels to enhance sustainability without requiring hardware modifications to the marine transmission systems.

Collaborative Projects and Showcases

Our role as a full-system integrator is proven through rigorous field testing and international maritime showcases, where we optimize the entire drivetrain from the crankshaft to the propeller. Successful integration requires a meticulous match between engine torque curves and propeller pitch.

  • Genoa Boat Show: since 2019, Dumarey has showcased the marine conversion of the GM V8 engine at the Genoa Boat Show. This project demonstrates our ability to adapt high-volume, high-performance engine platforms to the nautical sector through a fully integrated drivetrain approach. Key activities include the selection of optimized gear reduction ratios, redesign of cooling circuits for continuous marine duty, and the integration of salt-spray-resistant electronics to ensure long-term reliability in harsh operating environments.
  • Heritage 9.9 US Boat: developed in collaboration with Castagnola Yacht, the Heritage 9.9 represents a technical benchmark for our drivetrain integration capabilities. Powered by twin 500 hp GM V8 engines, the vessel features bespoke engine calibration combined with synchronized drivetrain management. Custom gearbox configurations and precisely matched reduction stages ensure smooth power delivery, mechanical efficiency and optimal propeller loading, elevating both performance and driving comfort in a premium wooden motorboat.
